Controversial new Nandos ad

This one should get a few tongues wagging. Here’s the new Nandos ad that is being released today on TV. Given the recent launch of the new breakaway Congress of the People (Cope) party from the ruling African National Congress (ANC) — and imminent elections next year, this one is going to be hotter than extra hot peri peri!

In true Nandos style, the ad is newsworthy, cheeky, funny and clever… a great piece of satire. The ad features internationally reknown political satirist Evita Bezuidenhout/Pieter Dirk-Uys. Will be interesting to see if any other political parties are lampooned in follow-up ads as we get closer to elections.

It’s not the first time Nandos have created ads that plug in to the prevailing Zeitgeist of the country: their last ad was on the back of internet phenomenon Vernon Koekemoer, with added Chuck Norris! Viva democracy!

So, what do you think? A good, witty piece of satire or have they “crossed the line”?

Fantastic. We need more of this sort of thing, especially from the media, regardless of the shape or form.

I don’t see it as being controversial and in my opinion not particularly funny.

If I were Nandos I would be concerned that the audience would make an interpretation of tacit support for COPE and risk alienating some of its consumer base.

Maybe statements like this are good for democracy but I can’t help but feel this is a little bit like teasing a dog from behind a fence, which is ok until there is no fence and all you have is an angry dog with no chance of a placative result.

Great Ad that subtly hints at the state of S.A’s political climate…and sells chicken!

  15. Jeanette Thu, 27 Nov 2008 15:06:48 CST

I think it’s brilliant because it’s still slightly subtle.

Great ad. Love the hint at “choice” being the order of the day for SA. great stuff. They are never short of good ad concepts.

Iconic and topical which is cool for brand.
There’s that ‘in on something irreverent’ territory that Nando’s owns.
    But where’s product in this?
A bit lost – if not put down.
I guess you can’t do everything in one spot.
    Thanks for the post.

Not especially funny. I mean “you can’t just have A & C”. Heeeee hawwww. Bit obvious isn’t it? The kind of joke that would raise a room full of groans.

Nice to see a Nando’s ad with a bit of edge to it again though.

  24. CM Fri, 28 Nov 2008 16:46:42 CST

Had a good chuckle but then the ANC’s antics are quite hilarious enough without a fast food outlets input.

It also doesn’t matter if Nado’s insults the ANC or COPE, both probably would choose fffried chicken over grilled anyway.

I don’t think this ad is controversial really, it is tongue-in-cheek for sure. I do think though that it brings up a more real problem though and that is that South Africans are looking for options.

We are looking for a candidate who will really take the interests of the country to heart and to work. Such a candidate is hard to find we have had only one – in my opinion – and his tenure was too short to make the desired impact I think.

So back to the ad, I think it really subtly highlights our politcal situation and makes people talk. Will Nando’s sell more chicken, certainly. Why, well because they agree with what you are thinking and they are fueling your thoughts, therefore you will choose them over another brand when the hunger strikes. They understand you.

@John I don’t think Nando’s aliented anyone. Is offering the concept of choice to a country alienting anyone? I do think we need to become more vocal and take more action against empty promises and uselessness in our government.

We almost need good old american style campaigning, they are so good at it I think most people will get to the polls here and vote for Obama.

  26. Vincent Maher Mon, 01 Dec 2008 18:48:08 CST

I must agree with John and Jarred, the ad is a bit lame because it implies we haven’t had choice in the past. With more than 15 parties on our electoral roll (http://www.southafrica.info/about/democracy/polparties.htm), to imply there has never been a choice is just patronising and maybe that’s what a minority in the country will think is funny about it.

  27. Mitchell Geere Mon, 01 Dec 2008 21:27:45 CST

@Vincent it comes down to the marketing those parties do, and to tell you the truth they do nothing. If they did I would know about them without having to deliberately go to that site. It would be common knowledge.

You can look anywhere and you will see Obama information and you will know exactly who he is. We need parties that advertise effectively, parties who tell us clearly what they stand for and fights for their view in a public forum.

Politics needs to get more sophisticated in this country, when it does we will have more sophisticated ads ;)

  28. heartwarmer Mon, 01 Dec 2008 23:42:24 CST

err…agree that its lame, perhaps on the better side of lame if ever there is such.
maybe not lame afterall but bland. I just think they had a clever idea, but could have used it way better than what they’ve done here. bland I say.

  29. Dolce Tue, 02 Dec 2008 11:38:32 CST

I think it’s FAB. Political satire is under threat in SA. It’s good to see Evita’s still being cheeky!

  30. Jacoba Thu, 04 Dec 2008 11:47:13 CST

I cannot see how they could have “crossed the line”?

For goodness sake, the ANC haven’t delivered the goods and they certainly won’t be able to in the forseeable future! If they have so much faith in themselves, why are they in such a tizz about COPE’s name?

The ad is sweet – certainly not offensive!

  31. Vanessa Wed, 28 Jan 2009 23:35:03 CST

It’s a great ad. As usual Nando’s gets everyone talking and that’s what it’s all about is it not? My favourite comment – Darb : Surprised the tagline isn’t “We can’t cope with just A and C”
